The contribution of pro bono services to the poor has a long history in Philadelphia. All of volunteers, including attorneys, paralegals, and law students have consistently donated their time and talent to represent low-income Philadelphians, made financial contributions to assist in projects, and provided much needed resources to those in need of legal services.
VIP, through its volunteers and staff, serves more than 1,700 individuals and families annually who could not afford attorneys and whose cases could or would not be handled by other public interest organizations. We are the agency of last resort for the majority of our clients.
Our growing number of clients are among the poorest in Philadlephia and the region more generally. To be eligible for our services a client's income must be at or below 200%* of the federal poverty guidelines. Consequently, our most financially secure single clients earn up to $22,980, while a family of four lives on only $47,100.
You can help VIP say YES to more clients by enrolling to become a volunteer.
*The sole exception to this rule applies to clients seeking legal assistance from LawWorks to form a small business whose income may be at 300% of the poverty guidelines.
Volunteer of the Month
Every month VIP chooses an attorney that has captured the heart of pro bono service.
